What exactly does "Gearch" mean? And how on earth do you pronounce it?

Quite simply, Gearch is Green Search. It is pronounced ger-ch, just like search but with a “G”.

How does Gearch help the environment?

Nobody wakes up in the morning wanting to hurt the environment. But modern life can make that very difficult. Using Gearch is different - You search. We plant trees. Easy. Your searches help us fund tree planting in a way that is ecologically sustainable and that will reduce soil erosion, replenish groundwater aquifers and absorb the growing levels of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere.

Will using Gearch really have an impact?

Yes! Working together we can make a real difference. One tree might not, but what about 100? Or a 1,000? How about 10,000 trees a year? If just 0.001% of internet users actively use Gearch on a monthly basis, we can plant nearly 110,000 trees a year! Planting this many trees would have a huge impact on our partner communities and offset the carbon use of almost 5,000 cars.

For more details, please visit the Why Trees section. A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Where will my trees be planted?

Your tree is planted in a country of your choice through our network of reputable partners around the world. However, we have limited the choice of countries to where tree planting will be the most beneficial for the local community and global environment.

How do I know that my tree will be planted?

We work with only the most reputable and legitimate tree planting and environmental organisations in the world. We hope to one day be able to figure out some way to make a worldwide tour of all the countries we are planting trees!

Does it cost me anything?

Nope, not a single penny. Just use Gearch for your Internet searches and start accumulating tree points. Being free is just another reason why we love Gearch.

How good are the search results?

Gearch is powered by Google™, so your results will be the same as if you went directly to their site. You can check it out by just typing in a search and comparing the results. Just remember which country version (e.g. google.com versus google.co.uk) of Google you are using.

Do you log my searches?

Nope! We do not save any of your search terms.  Please see our Privacy Policy for further details.

How does Gearch benefit?

We are firm believers that green business can be good business. We are driven by our belief that the environment is one of the most important issues that impacts all of us and that we can work together to improve. We are committed to investing 100% of the profit generated from searches towards planting trees and, eventually, renewable energy.

Why should I join?

You help the environment with no loss of convenience and virtually no change in your daily routine. By using Gearch and getting your friends involved, you help raise environmental awareness and make a real contribution to the environment.

Couldn't I just click on searches all day on Gearch and grow lots of trees?

In theory, yes but that would not be very productive. While we don't track any of your search terms, we will investigate very unusual search activity to maintain the integrity of Gearch.

Why don’t you have a black version of Gearch?

We’ve done some research into the “black” version of search engines and found that little benefit (if any at all) comes from having a black screen when using modern LCD computer monitors (the cool, sleek ones). Energy savings can be realised from older CRT (cathode-ray tube) monitors, but nearly 75% of all monitors worldwide are actually the more-compact, more-energy-efficient LCD screens.
